Do you draw what you are going to build or do you just get the idea?
Answer:
In Creator, we get a lot of inspiration for our products from real life examples. Because our main product themes are vehicles, creatures, and houses we often look at images on the internet and then create a mood board. A mood board can show features, functions of the example, or detailing and styling. Using these mood boards for reference and inspiration we generally start building from bricks straight away. Once we have the first sketch model built it is then easy to communicate how the model will look and what changes it may need for the next development loop. Sketches are sometimes used when we want to show something specific but with a 3D model, it is much quicker and easier to communicate our ideas.
Do you use the ideas from people outside LEGO?
Answer:
Yes! Creator and LEGO Direct are both part of a program called INVOLVE where we invite fans and children to comment on our products and even work with designers to create concepts for future products. In order to become a part of INVOLVE, you need to do a few things. First, you have to love to build! Second you should take pictures of the things you build and post them online at places like creator.lego.com. By doing that, you give us a chance to see what you’ve been creating. Finally, you should participate in as many LEGO-sponsored events as possible. The more you meet with LEGO representatives, the better chances you have of standing out! Good luck and keep on building.
Does including motors make models more difficult to design?
Answer:
When you add functions to your model, it always makes the design process more difficult. With motors and functions in you model you have to make a lot of test, so you now that your model is working 100%. This takes time, so the design process is also longer for a model that includes a motor.
