Builder Profile

Name: Allen Demers, LEGO Model Designer
Age: 35

My LEGO background:

When I was 7, I was introduced to LEGO. My first LEGO set was a basic set with the large-scale LEGO figures. I had a strong interest in the Space sets as a kid and always wanted the newest largest spaceship available. As I grew older I started to develop an interest in the Technic line, which gave me a hands-on way to learn how machines work.

I started work for LEGO in 1989 as a Model Builder. My co-worker and I would build LEGO dragsters and race them in the back parking lot. When the RCX was introduced in 1996, I fell in love with LEGO all over again. The idea of making programmable machines and robots was so exciting! Now I could make whatever I wanted, and it would work without me -- how cool is that?

During my LEGO career, I have built a 25-foot tall robot statue in Chicago (with the help of four of my co-workers -- thanks guys!) and I learned how to use 3D modeling software. I also learned various programming languages and designed kits for the LEGO Educational Division. Some of the other sets I have designed can be found in the early LEGO Mindstorms product line.

My advice to aspiring LEGO Master builders:

Try to design the kinds of models you like, whether they are sculptures or machines. If you get stuck, just take a break, walk away, and come back to your model later. Approaching the problem with a clear mind may help. If you are still stumped, call on a friend to get a different opinion on the problem. Your friend may have a new idea that you didn't think of trying.

School has a lot to offer, even if you might not see it right away. Ask one of your teachers to explain what you are learning and why you need to know it for the future. Different people need to know different things for different reasons. No one says you have to be the best at everythying, but try to at least understand and appreciate what you learn.

Terrestrial Solar Tracker, one of Allen's many LEGO creations
Powered and programmed with the RCX, this device follows the sun across the sky so that the solar panel can charge with full energy!
